I often forget to check on my own site with all the work I do for my other clients. So imagine my surprise when I go to my website today and every link from my home page went to a page giving me a 404 Page Not Found Error on my WordPress.org site. I was sick.
I immediately called Godaddy because I’m used to them helping me with my issues on my websites but today the customer service rep I got was unwilling to help me out. Instead he wanted to sell me an SSL certificate that I’m not interested in because my site is purely informational, I don’t collect data or take payments. No help there….
I started researching the problem and found out that there is a simple fix for this issue. (Disclaimer: This may not work for everyone but in my case it worked like magic). Normally when you are having a 404 Error on all pages on your site, something has gone wrong with your Permalinks and needs to be fixed immediately to ensure you keep traffic coming to your site and so that your clients don’t think something has happened to your online business..
Here’s the Permalink Fix:
- Simply log into your WordPress Admin Panel. (yourwebsite.com/wp-admin)
- Go to Settings
- In the Settings Menu, click Permalinks
- Switch from the Permalink setting you are currently using to another
- After making that selection click Save Changes
You are done.
I hope this simple fix worked for you as it did for me. There is a wealth of information on the internet about fixing Permalinks but if you are anything like me you are looking for the easiest and quickest way to fix it first.
If you have any suggestions or fixes of your own, feel free to leave you fixes below to help the next poor soul that runs into this problem.
